The word Halloween or Hallowe'en dates to about 1745 and is of Christian origin. The word "Halloween" means "hallowed evening" or "holy evening". It comes from a Scottish term for All Hallows' Eve (the evening before All Hallows' Day). In Scots, the word "eve" is even, and this is contracted to e'en or een. Over time, (All) Hallow(s) Eve(n) evolved into Halloween. Although the phrase "All Hallows'" is found in Old English (ealra hālgena mæssedæg, all saints mass-day), "All Hallows' Eve" is itself not seen until 1556.
Set your Clocks Back One Hour.
Daylight saving time (DST) or summer time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months (that feature more daylight) so that people get up earlier in the morning and experience more daylight in the evening. Typically, users of DST adjust clocks forward one hour near the start of spring and adjust them backward in the autumn.
Starting in 2007, most of the United States and Canada observe DST from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, almost two-thirds of the year. The 2007 US change was part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
Election Day in the United States is the day set by law for the general elections of public officials. It occurs on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November (this does not necessarily mean the "first Tuesday" in a month because the first day of a month can be a Tuesday). The earliest possible date is November 2 and the latest possible date is November 8.
Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.)
Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving.
Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving has its historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, and has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well.

Most of us have seen on the national news networks that on every Veterans Day, the President, Vice-President, or a Cabinet member lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC). What many don’t know is that afterwards, there is a small ceremony held in the adjacent Memorial Amphitheater immediately afterwards. The ceremony is open to the public and is sponsored each year by one of our many national service organizations, i.e., National Purple Heart Association, Gold Star Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans Association, etc. There is a military service band providing musical entertainment and a formal parading of the colors of both the American Flag and the flags of the various service organizations, combined with a small speech by a dignitary present. This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the Veterans Day Observance at Arlington.
As has been our tradition, the Northern Virginia Chapter (VA3) attends the ceremony every year inviting other Virginia and other State Chapters to join us in this patriotic and moving event. Politics aside, it is the Office of the POTUS that usually presides over the event, and it is an extremely patriotic and moving event honoring the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces during both war and peacetime.
If you would like to join us, we will be meeting/briefing at 7:15AM this Saturday with KSU promptly at 7:30. The meeting location is the local Sheetz (gas station), located at 2500 Caton Hill Rd, Woodbridge, VA 22192. From there we will ride the I-95 E-Z Pass Express Lanes to ANC. For those visiting from out of State, EZ Passes are not needed for motorcycles on this portion of I-95. We will ride to the ANC Parking Garage arriving at approximately 8:10AM, walk to the Welcome Center, and then take a tram to the Memorial Amphitheater. We arrive early to secure our seats for this limited seating event. The ceremony begins at 11AM and lasts roughly 90 minutes from start to finish.
FYI - Attendees are required to pass through a security checkpoint to gain access to the cemetery and Memorial Amphitheater. Prohibited items: large bags or backpacks, firearms and weapons of any type, laser pointers, aerosol containers, soda cans, coolers, picnic baskets, tripods, lighters, screwdrivers (or similar tools), air horns, personal protection sprays, and insulated beverage containers. Clear plastic water bottles and umbrellas are permitted. Also note that while marijuana use is legal in VA, ANC is located on Federal Grounds where it is still prohibited. Don’t bring party favors.
For those caging or wanting to ride on their own, feel free to meet us at the parking garage, Welcome Center, or in the Memorial Amphitheater. If you have any questions or want to come early and spend the night prior, we will open up our homes to you, just email or pick up the phone.
Regardless of what you and yours do on Veterans Day, we wish you all a festive, safe, and enjoyable day!
